Dear Saint Mary Star of the Sea Families,
My name is Lei Ann Galvez, and I am thrilled to introduce myself as the Interim Principal of Saint Mary Star of the Sea School. It is truly an honor to lead alongside our dedicated staff in a school community rich with spiritual traditions. I am excited to be part of this vibrant community, where we share our faith, nurture virtues, and empower our students to reach their fullest potential.
My journey in education began in 1989 at Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs (SECEP), where I taught students with severe emotional disabilities. In 1992, I joined Chesapeake Public Schools, teaching students with learning disabilities. After nine years, I transitioned to St. Matthew’s School in Virginia Beach, where I taught fourth grade while researching programs to support students with minor disabilities, ensuring their access to a Catholic education. In 2003, I became the Discovery Coordinator at St. Matthew’s, and in 2011, I took on the additional role of Assistant Principal. Of my 35 years in education, 23 have been devoted to Catholic education. Serving in Catholic education truly is a calling, a ministry, and a privilege.
On a personal note, I’ve been happily married to my husband, Mark, for 35 years—he was my prom date! We have three wonderful adult daughters who are proud graduates of St. Matthew’s School.
I firmly believe that great schools are built by the collective efforts of exceptional teachers, staff, parents, and community members. My goal is to further strengthen our purposeful community through teamwork, open communication, and collaboration with all stakeholders. Together, we will continue to nurture and enhance the strong culture of excellence and faith at Saint Mary Star of the Sea School. Pope Francis reminds us, “The family remains the basic unit of society and the first school in which children learn the human, spiritual, and moral values that enable them to be a beacon of goodness, integrity, and justice in our communities.” I am eager to partner with you—the first educators of your children—in fulfilling our shared mission of academic, spiritual, and moral development, with the ultimate goal of guiding one another closer to Heaven.
As I embark on this exciting journey, I am committed to working closely with our talented faculty, staff, and Parent Teacher Organization to ensure your children thrive academically, socially, and spiritually.
