Sister Mary Therese Brooks, O.P. - 6th Grade Homeroom & Language Arts, Grade 5 -8 Science, Including Marine Science
After teaching at Saint Mary Star of the Sea for eight years and being present at the beginning stages of the marine science curriculum, I am thrilled to be able to continue helping to develop the marine science program. I hold a master's degree in science and math education, with an emphasis in biology and certification in earth science. I also hold a master's degree in curriculum and development. I believe the Lord is giving me this opportunity to share my passion for the sciences with as many students at Saint Mary Star of the Sea School as possible. These students will be exploring the great wonders of the water around them along with all of God's awesome creation.
To fully take advantage of the location of our school property on Mill Creek, I lead the Marine Science Club once a month after school. Club participants have a chance to observe, study and work with hands-on activities including marine plants, animals, and their environments! As a club, we are very active in cleaning and maintaining the school´s shoreline, as good stewards of the Earth.
Ken Williams - 6th, 7th, 8th Math, Algebra and Geometry
I served in the U.S. Air Force for over 27 years. I had always wanted to be a teacher to help inspire young minds. I am looking forward to helping Saint Mary’s students gain an excellent foundation in Math. I want to be the teacher that students look back on and say he cared and made a difference.
I bring five years of teaching experience to Saint Mary’s. I taught at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School for five years. While there I taught Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and Q-Basic Computer Programming. Since being hired I have run into many alumni that have fond recollections of their time at Saint Mary’s. I am excited to be coming back for a fourth year to the Saint Mary’s family. I teach 6th grade Math and 7th and 8th grade Geometry and Algebra.
Sister Anne Elise Wiora, O.P. - Seventh Grade Homeroom & Religion 6th - 8th, Algebra 8th
Greetings! My name is Sister Anne Elise, and I am happy to be a part of this welcoming community. This is my first year teaching at Saint Mary Star of the Sea School and also the first year I am living anywhere close to the ocean. It is beautiful here!
I grew up near Chicago where I completed my bachelor's degree in Math education. I then began teaching Math and coaching basketball before entering the Dominican Sisters five years ago. It is a great blessing to have the opportunity to continue my love for teaching as a religious sister. For the past two years, I taught Algebra I and II, Scripture, and Morality at Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
This year, at Saint Mary's, I am teaching 6th - 8th grade Religion, 8th grade Algebra, and I am also helping out with 5th and 6th grade Math. My hope is that the students and I grow even closer to the Lord in Religion class and even in Math. It is a great gift to read and meditate on the Bible and teachings of the faith with the students. I am looking forward to see how God touches each of our student's lives this year!
Mrs. Heather Potchatek - 8th Grade Homeroom, 6th - 8th Grade History and 7th - 8th Grade Language Arts
Hello! My name is Heather Potchatek and I am so thrilled to begin teaching this year at Saint Mary Star of the Sea School. I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past 15 years and a homeschool mom/teacher for the past four years. This year marks the beginning of my career as a teacher in a traditional classroom.
I am a graduate of Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. I completed the Career Switcher program at Old Dominion University in April 2016, obtaining my teacher certification for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
My family has been living in the Hampton Roads area for the past five years--which is a record for us! Previously, we lived in New Hampshire, Australia, and Oregon (no, we are not military--we just love to try new areas!) We have fallen in love with this area and are hoping to stay here long-term!
My husband, Alex, and I have three children. Hallye, our youngest, is a 6th grade student at Saint Mary Star of the Sea School. We are both so excited to be here!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my love of learning with your children! It's going to be an amazing and fantastic school year!
