Meet the Enrichment Faculty

Mrs. Clemencia Johnson- Foreign Language (Spanish)

My name is Clemencia Johnson and I teach Spanish at Saint Mary’s to students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. I come from a multicultural family. Although I was born in Chile, as a child I also spent time with my family in Bolivia. In Chile, I attended a co-ed Catholic school taught by Spanish nuns. I have fond memories of my teachers, especially Sister Teresa who was my kindergarten teacher. Her ways and tender nature inspired me to become a teacher. I often remember and share memories of her with my students.

As a teenager, I moved to the United States with my family and attended high school. There, I met my husband. We have been blessed with three sons. When our sons grew up, I decided to continue my education and enrolled at the College of William & Mary. As part of the program, I studied one summer at the University of Cadiz in Spain.

I enjoy learning about other cultures. I find it essential that in order to understand each other, we need to know about others. It is my desire that my students will see the differences and similarities that we all share as human beings, learn from other cultures and appreciate their diversity. With this experience, they will be able to form a bridge between nations.

I am a graduate from the College of William & Mary with a major in Hispanic Studies and a minor to teach English to students of other languages. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in Secondary Foreign Language. I hold a Virginia State License and I am certified teacher, PreK-12.

This is my sixth year teaching Spanish. I have also taught French and Latin as exploratory languages.

Mrs. Jamie Green- Technology/ Media Specialist

My name is Jamie Green. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to be the Technology & Media Specialist at Saint Mary’s. My love for Christ, Mary Mother of God, my family, and children granted me this opportunity to work at this wonderful school. My passion for teaching became evident when my children were born. Being a domestic engineer (aka: stay-at-home mom) revealed my love to teach and watch young children experience life. When my children began their school career here at Saint Mary’s, it provided me the opportunity to work as a substitute and teacher’s aide. Both of my children have been attending Saint Mary’s since they were 3 years old. This school offers not only a wonderful faculty and staff, but the opportunity for each child to grow in their faith and academic life.

I hold an A.A.S in Computer Information System from Thomas Nelson Community College and a B.S. in Computer Information Systems. I have completed the Career Switcher Program at Old Dominion University and I am currently certified to teach Pre-K (3) through 3rd grade and all grade levels in Computer Science.

Mr. Malik Salaam - PK-8 Physical Education, Athletic Director

My name is Malik Salaam and I am the Athletic Director and Physical Education teacher at Saint Mary Star of the Sea School. I am elated to be a part of this school. It is my goal to put together a program that meets and challenges the different skills and abilities of the children.

I come from Hampton University where I served in many different capacities; the most memorable being a lead teacher for their 4 year old Pre-K program. I have also served in the AmeriCorps where we helped mentor families and children in need. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Management along with a master degree in Sports Management.

I firmly believe that children grow more when they are challenged properly; so while under my instruction, I will be looking for new and interesting ways to challenge them while keeping them engaged and motivated. My plan is to work with the children so they can develop a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Mrs. Elise McGorrey - PK-8 Fine Arts, 5th grade Homeroom & Language Arts

Greetings! My name is Elise Isom and I am so blessed to be the art teacher at Saint Mary Star of the Sea School. Art is a means for young people to express themselves, to learn how to work with others, to think critically and most importantly to exercise their creativity. As a part of the Saint Mary’s family, I look forward to making your child’s experience in art class a colorful adventure filled with many beautiful creations.

As an artist, my passion for the arts is personal. As long as I can remember I have had a pencil and paper in my hands. Some of my fondest memories come from the art classroom. I hope to bring the same memories to the students at Saint Mary’s. Regardless of their artistic ability, all students are capable of being creative. Creativity means coming up with new ideas, putting things together in new ways, and thinking outside the box. It’s a skill that can transfer to all areas of life. My hope is that students feel inspired to use their creativity at home, in their communities, and out in the big wide world.

In 2012 I graduated from VCU with my Bachelors in Fine Art. During the past three years I have had experience in the classroom as a teacher’s assistant, as a coordinator for summer art camp programs, and as a substitute teacher. My work as an artist has also given me a breadth of experience across different mediums and techniques. In spring of 2016 I graduated with my Masters of Art in Teaching from Liberty University with an endorsement to teach visual art to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. This year I look forward to nurturing creativity and watching it blossom in preschool through middle school.

Mrs. Terri Finn - Resource Teacher

My name is Terri Finn and I have been part of the Saint Mary Star of the Sea School family for the last eleven years. All three of my children are graduates of Saint Mary's and have used the foundations of this school to lead them through successful high school and college careers.

After staying at home with my children for many years I returned to teaching first grade in 2004. I am currently the Resource aide, which allows me to work with many children throughout the school. I am a 1989 graduate of Towson University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.
